GOBA Community Meeting to be held January 14

A community meeting will be held on January  14, 2010 at 7:00 pm in the Media Center of the Vinton County High School for anyone interested in being involved when the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure (GOBA) comes rolling into Vinton County on Friday, June 25th .  The purpose of the meeting is to provide general information regarding how individuals, non-profit groups and businesses can be a part of the visit by the 3,000 guests.

GOBA, will once again visit Vinton County and McArthur this June as it winds its way through the southeastern Ohio hills.  Approximately 3,000 cyclists and their support personnel will ride past Lake Hope and into McArthur to camp overnight on the grounds of the Vinton County High School.  This will be the third such visit to the county as in 1997 and 2001 GOBA visited much to the delight of the participants and the community.

“This is a golden opportunity for us to showcase our county and its assets,” said Brandi Betts, Vinton County Marketing Director.  “For approximately 24 hours, we will have over 3,000 guests here in the county, and we want them to have an enjoyable time during their stay.   We will need the total support of the community.”

Bruce Knox and Jennifer Cardaras are the local coordinators for the visit and they have already have been busy lining up committee chairpersons for the types of support needed to make the event a success.

In announcing the meeting, Knox stated that people will be needed to help work on beautification, logistics, emergency planning, housing, food services, entertainment and the distribution of local information.

The following individuals or groups have been tapped to chair the various committees:  Beautification – Jim & Carolyn Taylor; Logistics – Jerry Zinn; Emergency Planning – Tom Coehlo ; Housing - Janet Bolender; Food Services - Roxann Ward; Entertainment – Dave Boothe and Information – local BPW members.

If individuals, groups or business wish to be involved, please plan to attend the meeting.  If you are unable to attend or have questions concerning the meeting or GOBA’s visit to Vinton County, you may call the Vinton County Convention and Visitors Bureau at 740-596-5033 or 1-800-596-4459.

Recipes and Memories: Cookbook has arrived

The Chamber of Commerce is now selling the cookbook “Recipes and Memories.” The cookbook is a compilation of recipes from community members and Chamber member businesses.

The book also features photos from Vinton County’s past. William McKinley’s presidential campaign parade in McArthur, the old Hamden store and post office, and the Bay Bridge in its original location are just a few photos that you will find in this limited edition book.

The Chamber hopes that community members will view this book as a useful cooking tool as well as a Vinton County collectible. If nothing else, it should provide a fascinating walk down memory lane for many people in the community.

Cookbooks are $10 each but the Chamber is offering a special for those who purchase more than one book. You can purchase two cookbooks for $18 through September 18. So buy one for yourself and one for a friend—or better yet, stock up and give them as Christmas gifts! Stop by the Chamber Office at 104 W. Main St., McArthur to buy yours today.

Want a preview of some of the yummy recipes? Here’s one to try tonight.
